Most of us are missing out on our own lives. We’re too busy preoccupied with day-to-day activities almost in a dream-like state of mind where we’re really not connected to the world around us. We’re often bogged down by our worries, troubles, past mistakes, and the judgment and reactions to the things we see and do. We are literally on autopilot every single day of our lives and missing out on so much that the world around us has to offer.
The good news is that we can learn to become more mindful and present at the moment. Mindfulness is defined as the quality or state of being aware or conscious of something. There are many simple ways you can become more mindful. To help you get started, here are five tips to start incorporating into your daily life to live a more calm, peaceful, and more centered life.
Observe Your Breathing
Breathing obviously occurs naturally, but when you really start paying attention to your breathing, it can take you from your busy thoughts and fears and into your inner spirit and body.
Connect With Your Senses
Touch, taste, sight, sound, and smell are your five senses and the gateway into living in the present moment. In the mornings, take a moment to soak in the warmth and aroma of your coffee. While walking into work, observe your surroundings, and notice the beautiful scenes of nature. Before drifting off to sleep, feel the comfort of your blankets. These are just a few ways to connect with your senses to become more mindful of the world around you.
Pause Between Action
Take the time each and every day to pause. Take mini pauses between each action during your day, such as feeling the door handle before opening it, feeling the weight of your body in your chair before starting your work, listening to the sound of the phone before answering it.
Become a Careful Listener
The next time you engage in a conversation with someone, make it a goal to listen fully. Take in what the other person is saying without getting lost in your own thoughts.
Learn to Meditate
Meditation has numerous benefits, and it is proven to increase your levels of happiness, energy, inspiration, and inner peace. Even 10 minutes a day can have a positive influence on your life.
